Godfrey Laundy

(Godfrey Laundy)

On 6th October, 2004, Godfrey came along to the Iron Acton Parish Hall to watch a rehearsal of our pantomime, Cinderella (what he wrote).

Godfrey has since joined the group and has been seen in many of our productions and has written several of our pantomimes.

My interest in the theatre began whilst a teenager at school in Middlesex. An early role as Ferovius in George Bernard Shaw's Androcles and the Lion whet my appetite for the stage and I graduated from local drama group to youth drama school at the Questors Theatre in Ealing, West London, now the largest community theatre in Europe. By the age of twenty one I was a leading tenor soloist with the Greenford Opera Company performing in works by Strauss, Offenbach, Gilbert and Sullivan and Bernstein amongst others. Although the voice may have wavered over the years the enthusiasm for stage work remains. I have always maintained that music is an important element in entertainment. It conveys mood and situation and this is reflected in my pantomimes and other writings.

By profession I am a University Research Fellow in Transplantation and have published more than one hundred articles in the scientific press. Writing for the stage is a most welcome and rewarding alternative. I started scriptwriting some thirty years ago for the annual Blood Transfusion Service Christmas Revue! Since that time I have been involved in both youth and adult drama groups from my home village of Frampton Cotterell in South Gloucestershire.

The children of today are the theatre of tomorrow and I actively encourage their involvement in all my productions. I would like to think that this leads to a life long love of the theatre and a real appreciation of the dramatic arts. All three of my children have appeared on stage with the St Peter's Players and my eldest daughter has awards from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and was a member of the American Association of Dance.

My first pantomime, Rudolph's Revenge, was performed in 1986 and since then various groups have used my scripts, including a very moving production of Cinderella by head injury patients from the Headways charity at Frenchay Hospital. I am a founder member of St Peter's Players and have been their writer and director for the last five years. I have written nine pantomimes to date and still enjoy 'treading the boards' taking particular pleasure in portraying 'the villain'.
